About this Event
Title: The Thirty Meter Telescope, the next generation of ground based telescopes. What, why, and how.
Speaker: Dr. Warren Skidmore, Thirty Meter Telescope International Observatory (TIO)
Abstract: Do you know that we are planning to build a gigantic telescope that would enable astronomers to see things ~10 times fainter than they currently do? In this talk Dr. Skidmore will be discussing the Thirty Meter Telescope observatory development activities, the exciting scientific questions that drive the building of a giant telescope, how the observatory is designed to support a range of scientific studies and about the engineering solutions that have been developed to overcome the technical problems of constructing and operating a giant diffraction limited observatory. Some pieces of hardware will be on display and information sheets and free giveaways will be available to take away.
The lecture will be followed by telescope viewings from 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm on the lawn north of the Bourns College of Engineering building.
Date: Thursday, February 27, 2020
Time: 7 PM (lecture), 8 PM (telescope viewings)
Lecture location: Winston Chung Hall at UCR, room 205/206
Telescope viewing location: Lawn north of the Bourns College of Engineering building
