Dear Campus Community:

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Cindy Larive, Professor of Chemistry and Divisional Dean for Physical Sciences and Mathematics in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, has agreed to serve as our next Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education effective July 1, 2016.

Dr. Larive, who received her Ph.D. from UCR in 1992, joined our Department of Chemistry in 2005. In addition to an impressive record of publications in bioanalytical chemistry, she also has published and given invited presentations on topics related to teaching, mentoring, active learning, undergraduate research and curricular reform. She has led or participated as a Co-PI in education-related grants from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Hewlett Foundation. In 2011 Dr. Larive received UCR’s Innovative Teaching Award and she also is the recipient of the J. Calvin Giddings Award for Excellence in Education from the American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry. Please join me in congratulating Cindy as she assumes her new leadership role at UCR.

I also want to thank the search advisory committee for their work in identifying and evaluating a strong field of candidates, all of whom were clearly devoted to our undergraduate education mission. The members of that committee were:

Peter Graham, Professor of Philosophy and Associate Dean for CHASS Student Academic Affairs (Chair)
Cassie Guarino, Professor of Education
Kathryn DeFea, Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences
Yolanda Moses, Professor of Anthropology
Jack Eichler, Associate Teaching Professor of Chemistry
Elaine Wong, Associate Professor of Management
LaRae Lundgren, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment
Erika Perez, Student Representative

Last I want to again thank Professor Steven Brint for his five years of service as VPUE, for his leadership, and for his contributions to undergraduate education at UCR. Please join me in wishing him well as he returns full-time to the faculty.

Best Regards,

Paul D’Anieri
