CNAS Students Support Young Scientists at Riverside County Science & Engineering Fair

On February 27, CNAS Science Ambassadors served as volunteer judges at the Riverside County Science and Engineering Fair at the Riverside Convention Center, joining educators, industry professionals, and community partners in supporting the region’s next generation of scientists.

Hosted by the Riverside County Office of Education, the fair represents the culmination of months of student research, with participants advancing through school and district-level competitions to present their work at the county level. As STEM Administrator Yamileth Shimojo noted, “this might be the first time ever that they talk to a STEM professional,” highlighting the importance of creating opportunities for students to share their work and engage with those in the field.

As judges, CNAS students engaged with participants across grade levels, evaluating projects and offering encouragement to young researchers. Science Ambassador Dina Qaqish reflected on the level of inquiry she observed with the elementary division projects, noting, “I was impressed by the level of curiosity and critical thinking these younger students are already demonstrating. They’re asking meaningful questions and actively working to find answers.”

Ambassadors were also struck by the depth of scientific thinking among older students. “I am blown away by these students’ passion for science and their ability to apply the scientific method,” said Saalar Zarnegar, a fourth-year biochemistry major, noting the sophistication of projects across grade levels.

The experience created meaningful connections between current UC Riverside students and local youth. “They see that we’re here from UC Riverside,” Zarnegar added. “It gives them a sense of what their future could look like.”

For graduating senior Brandon Ho, the experience reinforced a sense of optimism: “The future looks really bright,” he said. “These students already have so much knowledge at such a young age.”

Through opportunities like this, CNAS continues to connect with the broader community while supporting and inspiring students at every stage of their scientific journey.
