Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where I can find a list of the books that will be required for my various classes this coming fall?

You can find the list of textbooks that are required for your classes each term at the UCR Campus Store. You can also use the Textbook search function on their site to find what books are required for each course. Then you can use that information to order your books on-line. You can also purchase your textbooks in person at the UCR Campus Store when you arrive on campus. If you are purchasing books before the course begins, be careful to only purchase "required" textbooks.  Those books or resources marked "optional" may or may not be recommended by your professor. Before you spend money on these optional resources, it might be best to get the professor's opinion. There are also options to rent your textbooks, which might be a good idea for general education courses you are taking. Renting is not recommended for textbooks required for courses in or related to your major. You should be prepared to buy those books and keep them as resources for the future.

Remember, if you are purchasing in person, you will want to get there early and be prepared to wait. There's often a long line at the beginning of the quarter. Please see the UCR Campus Store's web site for more information.
  • What kind of computer will I need this fall? Is there a specific type you'd recommend?

If you are looking to purchase a new laptop, you will want it to last for most, if not all of your college career. Look for something durable, lightweight and affordable. Our campus has many computer labs for students, so even if you come to campus without a computer, you should be able to complete your work!

UCR's Computing & Communications Office has recommendations for minimum specifications at their website. Most new computers will already conform to these specifications, but it can't hurt to check!
  • Who is my advisor and how do I make an appointment with him/her?

A listing of Academic and Faculty Advisors has been created.  You can drop by to see your academic advisor during your advisor's drop-in times, or you can make an appointment online to see your Advisor using Advisor Trac.
  • What are the requirements for my major?

Major requirements are listed in the UCR General Catalog. In addition, major requirement links can be found on each department's website (you can reach these pages from our departments page). If you need assistance interpreting these requirements, please see your academic advisor.
