UC Riverside's Douglas Yanega will share his views on bee behavior following screening of award-winning film in downtown Riverside, April 20

bees imageBees are social insects, cooperating in the hive and behaving for the benefit of the group.  What lessons, if any, do they have for us?

The public has an opportunity to find out on Friday, April 20, when Douglas Yanega, the senior museum scientist in the Department of Entomology at the University of California, Riverside, will participate in a special Earth Day event in downtown Riverside in which he will offer a scientific point of view on bees and their behavior.

The free event, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Universalist Unitarian Church, 3525 Mission Inn Ave., will feature the award-winning documentary “Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?

Following the screening of the film, Yanega will answer questions from the audience.

“I hope to help the audience in teasing apart the facts from the conjectures in the media portrayal of the problem,” he said.  “It can be hard for people to tell what is real, versus what is hype.”

Yanega has worked with native bees (non-invasive types) and was a member of a team of scientists that last year rediscovered in New Mexico the Cockerell’s Bumblebee, the rarest species of bumblebee in the United States.  Two years ago, Yanega and colleagues began digitizing and consolidating nearly one million specimen records of native bees from ten bee collections across the United States.

In 2009, he was appointed as a commissioner in the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, a prominent organization that generates and disseminates information and rules on the correct formation and use of animals’ scientific names.

UC Riverside’s student organization Sustainable UCR is one of the groups co-hosting the special Earth Day event at the church.
