Species Protection

Citrus Clonal Protection Program

A part of the Department of Plant Pathology and Nemotology, this cooperative program with the citrus growers of California gives researchers and growers a safe mechanism for the introduction of citrus varieties. It maintains the introduced varieties in a protected, disease tested collection of fruit and rootstock varieties that serves as a primary source of propagating materials.

Insectary and Quarantine Facility

One of the nation's most advanced university-based laboratories for developing and rearing transgenic plants and insects, studying exotic pests, and evaluating potential natural enemies. With areas designated as Biosafety Levels 2 and 3, the 28,000-square-foot facility can prevent cross-contamination of insect colonies that are being raised on transgenic living host plant material as well as confine genetically modified insects. The Biosafety Level 3 areas of the facility conform to National Institutes of Health standards governing the handling of genetically altered organisms.

Nematode Isolation and Quarantine Facility

Featuring a 1,500 square foot headhouse and another 1,500 square foot attached greenhouse, the facility is designed for projects that need isolation from other projects in regular Nematology Greenhouses.
