Patent Award Ceremony and EPIC Anniversary


CNAS Faculty Honored for Patents and Innovations

 

Wenbo Ma The First Annual UCR Patent Award Ceremony and EPIC anniversary took place October 11, honoring 27 UCR researchers who were issued patents in the last fiscal year, including 14 faculty from the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

The event, hosted by UCR’s Office of Technology Partnerships within Research and Economic Development, took place at the Riverside County Administration Center and also honored the first anniversary of EPIC (Entrepreneurial Proof-of-Concept Innovation Center), a partnership between UCR and Riverside County, along with other agencies to promote innovation and entrepreneurship.

UCR alumna and biotech entrepreneur Tina Nova was the keynote speaker at the event. She discussed her career, sharing lessons learned along the way and insights on entrepreneurship and innovation. Nova is President and CEO of Molecular Stethoscope and earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry from UCR.

Professor of Plant Pathology Wenbo Ma (above), an honoree for a patent she shares with Professor of Plant Pathology Georgios Vidalakis, on “identification of secreted proteins as detection markers for citrus disease,” spoke about their research related to preventing Huanglangbing, or Citrus Greening Disease.

Thomas Stone, CEO of Sensorygen, spoke about the company he leads with founder and president, UCR Associate Professor of Dean Uhrich being honored at patent eventMolecular, Cell and Systems Biology Anandasankar Ray. The company commercializes chemicals offering flavors and fragrances that interact with taste and smell for use in consumer products, including insect repellents.

Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors were honored, including CNAS Dean Kathryn Uhrich (right) and Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Michael Pirrung.

Building on a long history of patents and innovations from CNAS, including the nine highest royalty revenue-generating UCR inventions, here are the CNAS faculty-led patents that were honored for the past year:
