Distinguished Professor Mark S. Alber to Join UCR’s Department of Mathematics

Alber

The University of California, Riverside, is pleased to announce that Distinguished Professor Mark S. Alber will join the faculty in the CNAS Department of Mathematics effective June 30, 2016. Professor Alber is currently the Vincent J. Duncan Family Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Notre Dame. Professor Alber also serves as the Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Biocomplexity at Notre Dame, and is an adjunct professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

“We’re extraordinarily pleased to have a scholar of Mark Alber’s caliber joining our Department of Mathematics,” said CNAS Dean Kathryn Uhrich. “The interdisciplinary approach he applies to his work is a great fit for our college and for UCR as we continue to explore ways to share expertise and resources in solving important problems.”

Alber earned his M.S. (with honors) in applied mathematics at the Moscow Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania under the direction of J. E. Marsden. His research interests include computational and mathematical biology, biophysics, applied mathematics, multi-scale modeling and mathematical physics.

His interdisciplinary research projects funded by NIH and NSF include diverse and important topics such as studies of bacterial swarming and drug resistance, microtubule dynamics, early development and blood clot growth. He was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2011.

He currently serves and has served as editor and member of the editorial boards of many journals, special volumes and books. In particular, he is currently a deputy editor of the PLoS of Computational Biology and Section Editor of the Encyclopedia of Applied and Computational Mathematics recently published by Springer.

He is a member of the Committee of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) on Human Rights of Mathematicians and is a representative of the AMS to the AAAS Human Rights Coalition (HRC) and member of the HRC.
