A Message from the Dean, December 2017

Dean Kathryn Uhrich on a Year of Growth and Looking Ahead to 2018

Dean UhrichThank you for taking a look at our redesigned e-newsletter! We hope this quarterly update will keep you informed on news from the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS).

Indeed, the stories in this newsletter highlight another year of growth and excellence for CNAS. Research grant funding continues to rise, top-notch faculty are being recruited, and a number of new research facilities are in the works.

Research grant funding for CNAS has increased 27% since 2014. A few recent highlights include a $3.2 million award to improve solar power integration, a $4.5 million grant to develop disease-resistant strawberries, and an $8 million grant to fight vector-borne diseases.

The Multi-Use Research Building 1 (MRB1) being constructed on the corner of Aberdeen and North Campus Drive is set for completion in winter 2019, bringing 125,000 new square feet of state-of-the-art lab space to our research efforts. New plant growth environment facilities are also being built.

In addition, student enrollments have risen to 6,735 for CNAS and 23,278 for UCR, a new record for the campus. Robust outreach and recruitment efforts by CNAS are expanding the reach of science in our communities and contributing to one of the most diverse universities in the country with among the highest number of first-generation students.

As always, we appreciate the efforts of our entire CNAS community in helping to make these achievements happen, and we look ahead to what promises to be another great year.

With warm regards,

Kathryn Uhrich, Dean
